PRRAC Update (October 19, 2017): Conference season! New NCSD Research Brief

October 19, 2017 by

“Live tweeting” from the NCSD conference : If you do this kind of thing, please join us for real-time discussion at #NCSD2017, or tweet us @diverse_schools.   If you want to attend the conference in person, there is still time to register on site – just come to the registration table tonight at the NYU Kimmel Center (20 Washington Square South) at 6:00, or tomorrow morning at the Broadway entrance to Teachers College (at 120th & Broadway). More details at school-diversity.org/2017-conference

Housing Justice Network Conference:  Congratulations to the National Housing Law Project on one of the best HJN conferences in recent memory – with over 250 legal services and civil rights lawyers converging on DC last week from all over.  Richard Rothstein led off the conference with a plenary on the history of government sponsored housing segregation, moderated by former PRRAC board member Florence Roisman. PRRAC staff were kept very busy, in workshops covering Low Income Housing Tax Credit reform, small area fair market rents, protections for undocumented residents, lead-safe housing protections in HUD-assisted housing, and affirmative fair housing litigation.

New research from the National Coalition on School Diversity:  The NCSD’s latest Research Brief, “Can Socioeconomic Diversity Plans Produce Racial Diversity in K-12 Schools?” is out, just in time for the NCSD national conference. Thanks to authors Genevieve Siegel-Hawley, Erica Frankenberg, and Jennifer Ayscue for tackling a complicated topic that is still evolving.

Continuing progress in Hartford:  Rachel Cohen’s latest piece in the American Prospect, ” Desegregated, Differently,” highlights the continuing struggle to fulfill the Connecticut Supreme Court’s 1996 desegregation mandate, in the face of a state fiscal crisis and a capital city on the verge of bankruptcy in one of the wealthiest metropolitan areas in the U.S.   PRRAC continues to work in Hartford, supporting the “Sheff Movement,” a parent and community coalition that seeks to improve and expand the region’s interdistrict school integration plan.

PRRAC – Poverty & Race Research Action Council

The Poverty & Race Research Action Council (PRRAC) is a civil rights law and policy organization based in Washington, D.C. Our mission is to promote research-based advocacy strategies to address structural inequality and disrupt the systems that disadvantage low-income people of color. PRRAC was founded in 1989, through an initiative of major civil rights, civil liberties, and anti-poverty groups seeking to connect advocates with social scientists working at the intersection of race and poverty…Read More
