PRRAC Update (February 25, 2016): New book on immigrant integration

Save the date:  book launch for Integration Nation!   If you are in the DC area, please come to our office to hear Susan Eaton introduce her new book about successful immigrant integration efforts from across the U.S. — Integration Nation: Immigrants, Refugees, and America at its Best (published by the New Press).  This book originated in research for the “One Nation Indivisible” project, a joint effort of PRRAC and the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute.  Susan’s book talk is Thursday, March 24th, from 4:15-6:00, at 1200 18th St. NW #200, Washington, DC.  Light refreshments will be served.  RSVP here.

Upholding civil rights requirements in the Rental Assistance Demonstration:  PRRAC joined the Lawyers Committee and the National Fair Housing Alliance in testimony and written comments urging the Department of Housing and Urban Development to maintain basic civil rights siting standards in the new RAD program, which allows refinancing of public and assisted housing using monthly voucher payments along with public and private financing.  A larger share of RAD projects than expected are using the program for demolition and new construction, raising key fair housing concerns.  Some industry groups have urged HUD to weaken civil rights siting requirements for the RAD program.
 

Other resources and upcoming events:

Lead paint and children:  We joined many other national groups in a HUD petition for rule making led by the Shriver Center and Loyola University Law School Clinics to update HUD lead paint protocols in accordance with the latest scientific and medical knowledge.

“Urban America Forward” National Conference on March 4th in Washington, DC, will culminate a yearlong series of civil rights roundtables hosted by the University of Chicago Office of Urban Affairs.  The March 4th Conference will lay out a forward-looking civil rights agenda for the next administration.  Register here.
