PRRAC Update (February 15, 2018): New upcoming events in DC, NYC, MS

February 15, 2018 by

Join us at a PRRAC Symposium on Fair Housing Intersections, March 22: The Obama Administration made important progress connecting housing policy with transportation, education, and environmental justice – and the movement is being carried forward by activists and policymakers at the state and local levels. Please join us for a lively discussion of cross-cutting issues in civil rights and the interplay among progressive federalism, advocacy, and the federal government in protecting and advancing social justice. Featuring former Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, environmental justice leader Vernice Miller-Travis, Inclusive Communities Project President Demetria McCain, and other guests at PRRAC’s new offices, 740 15th Street NW #300, Washington DC, March 22 from 5:00-7:30 pm. More details to come.  You can register early by emailing us at registration@prrac.org.

Join us on March 28th at Cardozo Law School in New York City for an academic conference exploring the 50th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act, featuring a number of representatives of PRRAC’s Board and Social Science Advisory Board – should be quite interesting!  Register here (registration is free but required).
Hattiesburg, anyone?   If you are near Hattiesburg, Mississippi on March 24, feel free to join us as we release our video on the civil rights history of Hattiesburg, with a focus on struggles over housing and school segregation.  Drawn from our recent community engagement work in Hattiesburg with high school students and community activists.

PRRAC is hiring!
Check out our listing for a new Communications Manager here.

Inclusionary Zoning tool:  The Grounded Solutions Network has just released its new Inclusionary Housing Calculator. The Calculator is a web-based tool to help policymakers and other local policy stakeholders better understand the real estate economics that drive local housing policy choices. The Calculator measures the anticipated costs and revenues for a hypothetical development project and returns an estimate of profitability. Users can adjust key variables, like how much affordable housing the project will provide, to determine the financial viability of different development scenarios. Check it out today!

Congratulations to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund for its important victory in the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, blocking the racially motivated secession of a predominantly white community from a county-wide school district in Alabama – you can read the decision here.
Still time to register for this valuable civil rights history conference, The Kerner Commission at 50 – Feb 27-March 1 at UC-Berkeley, with simulcast at Johns Hopkins.

PRRAC – Poverty & Race Research Action Council

The Poverty & Race Research Action Council (PRRAC) is a civil rights law and policy organization based in Washington, D.C. Our mission is to promote research-based advocacy strategies to address structural inequality and disrupt the systems that disadvantage low-income people of color. PRRAC was founded in 1989, through an initiative of major civil rights, civil liberties, and anti-poverty groups seeking to connect advocates with social scientists working at the intersection of race and poverty…Read More
