PRRAC Update (March 2, 2018): Next steps on Small Area FMRs; Kerner Commission at 50

March 2, 2018 by

Victory and next steps in Small Area FMR case : Now that the case of Open Communities Alliance v. Carson is concluded (with a stipulated judgment for the plaintiffs entered on February 16 and a new April 1 implementation date set by HUD), we are turning our attention to monitoring compliance with the new rule, to make sure that public housing authorities in the metropolitan areas covered by the rule are taking full advantage of the rule’s provision to open up new opportunities for voucher families, and to protect existing tenants.  We will be working closely with the National Housing Law Project and local legal services lawyers and fair housing advocates to track implementation of the rule over the next 6-12 months.

Join us in DC at our “Fair Housing Intersections” event , March 22 at 5:00: featuring former Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx, environmental justice leader Vernice Miller-Travis, Inclusive Communities Project President Demetria McCain, and other invited guests.  Moderated by Dennis Parker, Director of ACLU’s Racial Justice Program and PRRAC Board Member. Register here.
Housing mobility updates:   We were excited to hear the recent announcement of a new housing mobility program starting at the Boston Housing Authority.  Housing mobility, Small Area FMRs, and our colleagues at Housing Choice Partners in Chicago were also featured in this Next City article about Chicago voucher families.
Thank you to the Haas Institute for an inspiring conference on the “Kerner Commission at 50.” Conference video is not up yet, but you can see an entertaining twitter summary with photos, infographics, and running commentary posted here.

PRRAC – Poverty & Race Research Action Council

The Poverty & Race Research Action Council (PRRAC) is a civil rights law and policy organization based in Washington, D.C. PRRAC was founded in 1989, through an initiative of major civil rights, civil liberties, and anti-poverty groups seeking to connect advocates with social scientists working at the intersection of race and poverty…Read More
